Rochelle Winter Davis | The Cheer Collective

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Rochelle and I am the founder of the cheer collective. The cheer collective is a mobile app where women can set, track and achieve their goals whilst being supported by a community of women. How did the business come about? I had the idea during the pandemic when we were in lockdown. I noticed my friends and family becoming more distant and really low so I created a whatsapp group and every day/week, I would set us different goals to achieve. It became this safe space where we could connect, support each other and feel good about achieving the goals that were set. At the end of the lockdown I shared the summaries of everything that we had achieved, the total number of steps, total water drank etc and everyone had said how the group really got them through the lockdown and so I thought, there’s something here and that's when I started to build the cheer collective.

Best career advice you have ever received? I was working on a deal once and everything that could go wrong with this deal was happening and I couldn’t help but feel stressed and worried and my boss at the time said to me, just see each issue as a problem to solve. This helps me keep my calm and work through things rather than getting emotional and feeling like the sky is falling!

What is one thing we should invest in for our business? For anyone building an app - the dev team. You can go with a cheaper option but its highly likely, in the long run it will cost you just as much. Investing in the right team, a prototype and going down the route of design first, its more expensive but its so worth it.

What is one thing you wish you had known when starting your business? I feel like I probably wasted a lot of time at the start trying to do everything by myself, and there are so many awesome communities out there for start ups, that you can leverage to help guide you.

What is your favourite part of your day to day ? When I get a message from someone thanking me for a post on instagram because it helped them and they needed to hear those words today.

What was an unexpected joy of creating your business? I have always worked for enterprise companies and with enterprise companies and I had no idea how incredible the small business community was. And how many incredible women I would meet. = The support is sometimes overwhelming, its incredible. I never feel alone - i always say “we” when referring to the cheer collective and I genuinely feel like Im doing it with all these people, despite it being just me.

Leave us with some words of wisdom ?

With everything that is going on in and around the world right now, its really important to make sure we're not pouring from an empty cup. Make sure you are makin time for yourself, self care and so as and when things happen to you or around you, you can handle it
