LOVE THE LAKE: LAKE MAC

If lockdown really took it's toll on you, an easy weekend away might be just the break you need to realign and get a breath of fresh air - literally and figuratively. With life starting to return to normal, now's the perfect time for you and your S.O. to treat yourselves to a weekend escape. With endless stretches of coastline, wilderness and cosy accomodation - Lake Macquarie is the ultimate weekend getaway. For a quick 90-minute drive up the M1 from Sydney, this laidback coastal destination is the perfect way to relax and reconnect without being too far from home.

Ramp up the romance...

The perfect picnic

There are plenty of parks in Lake Macquarie that are perfect for a scenic picnic and some quality couples time that might be well overdue. One of the most romantic spots on the lake is Pelican Foreshore - a shady paradise situated right on the waterfront. With an indulgent cheese platter and bottle of wine (or two), you and your S.O. can unwind and watch the sunset over the lake. If you’re feeling a tad more adventurous, you can grab your hiking boots and head to the Watagan Mountains. Start your day with a breathtaking trek through the green rainforest and waterfalls. Even better, bring a picnic basket and enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the Boarding House Dam picnic area.

Bliss beach date

Whether you're looking for a patrolled beach to take a dip in or something more secluded to relax on the sand, Lake Mac has got you covered. If you're up for a challenge, JetBuzz at Cams Wharf has a great range of boats and watercraft to hire. If you're after something more middle ground, hiring a stand-up paddle board to share is the perfect way to try something new and explore the lake while staying relaxed (and it's guaranteed to come with some laughs).

Seafood at Sunset

When the day is coming to an end and you find that you’re ready for a delicious meal for two, Lake Macquarie has some amazing waterfront restaurants that are perfect for a romantic dinner. Freshly caught seafood and famous Hunter Valley wines are highlights on many local menus, with a huge variety of cuisines available for whatever you're craving! For something extra special, don't go past Crusoe’s on the Lake. Located within the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, this overwater dining spot offers some of the best dining views in Belmont - coupled with delicious seafood platters including fresh blue swimmer crabs, SA tiger prawns, Sydney rock oysters, lemon pepper squid, panko crumbed prawns and battered sweetlip snapper.

Cosy cottages for couples...

Cedar Cottage

Cedar Cottage is an AirBnb gem perfect for a couple’s retreat with a peaceful, calm mood. Just metres from the waterfront, the modern open plan layout is complete with large windows, a luxurious bathroom, state-of-the-art kitchen, and everything you could ever want for a relaxing, rejuvenating, and private break.

Selby Cottage

When it comes to cute and cosy, Selby Cottage is the ultimate. This stunning waterfront accommodation is one of Lake Macquarie’s original workers' cottages (having undergone a gorgeous makeover, of course). The cottage retains some of its original charm - making it a sweet spot for a loved-up weekend away.

Treat yourself and your partner to a well earned break from the city and visit Lake Macquarie - happy planning!
